Make Your Own Organic Weed Killer

Make Your Own Organic Weed Killer

The class action lawsuit against Roundup for the potential connection between the main ingredient glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma has many people looking for other ways to kill weeds. As our weather warms up, weeds are popping up everywhere, and pulling them by hand hardly seems an option. There is an easy solution; make your own organic weed killer. All you need is:

  • One gallon sprayer
  • One gallon of vinegar
  • 2 cups of Epsom salt (or table salt)
  • 1/4 cup of dishwashing soap
  • Sunshine
Mix the vinegar, salt, and soap in the sprayer. The cheapest soap and vinegar you can find will work. You can use table salt,  but Epsom salt is safer in areas where you may want other things to grow. If you don't care about growing anything in an area, use table salt.

Pick a day when you don't expect any rain. Spray your weeds in the morning before the sun hits them so that you can get the advantage of as much sun as possible. The dish soap helps the salt and vinegar stick to the leaves. The combination of sunshine, salt, and vinegar will dry out the leaves and have them shriveled and brown by the end of the day.

FLIES IN YOUR EYES, AIN’T NO BIG SURPRISE

FLIES IN YOUR EYES, AIN’T NO BIG SURPRISE By: Mick Blankenship                It feels like Ethiopia outside, and my friends and I can’t stop the heat. Mosquito, gnat, ant, and fleas have reunited this black summer with unlimited love for you as the Red Hot Chilin Pests.  By the way, the bugs around here will eat you up so terribly, there’ll be nothing left of you but your soul to squeeze. Twisting and turning, your bug bites are burning, they’re biting your girl.  Forget about relaxing on your front porch swing, these bugs will make you want to give it away.  The mosquitoes will wait for you under the bridge downtown.  They’ll have you drawing blood, and it seems they just can’t get enough.  The dark necessities of the ant will leave you so bitten up that you are left with scar tissue.  The flea will have you sucking his kiss from the other side of your sock, no matter where you wear it.  The gnats ...

The Power of DIY

Have you ever found yourself in need of a specific item to fix an issue around your house? Maybe it’s a specialty bolt, a hand tool, or an AC filter. The next thing you know, you find yourself wandering the aisles of a large hardware warehouse, scanning row after row of items that aren’t your specialty bolt, hand tool, or AC filter. After you finally give up searching on your own, you spend the next ten minutes hunting down an employee, searching aisle by aisle, hoping someone can direct you to your item.   That frustration and disappointment is a waste of time when you have the convenience and superior customer service that is offered at your neighborhood hardware store, Blankenships’ Universal Supply, Inc. in the Midtown community on Springhill Avenue. If you’ve ever walked into Blankenships, you know the welcome feeling you have as you enter the door. If it’s not Mike or Tommy greeting you at the counter, ready to help, then it may just be the friendly, store cat.   Blanken...

Grain Free Freak Out!

Many of my customers have been freaking out recently about a potential link between grain free dog foods and a heart condition called canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).  If you are one of the concerned, I want to let you know that your dog can get most of the benefits you’ve seen from your grain free dog food by switching to a quality dog food with grain.  You can still see an improved coat, lean and muscular body mass, and avoid allergies with a quality food with grain.  The only benefit you will lose is smaller, cleaner stool as grains are full of insoluble fiber.  Be sure the food you select has barley, oatmeal, rice, or millet.  Avoid foods with corn, wheat, or soy.  Meat, or meat meal, should still be the first ingredient listed on the AAFCO approved label on the packaging.  If the food meets these criteria, your dog can still be healthy and you can sleep better at night.  You may just need a larger pooper scooper.  If you are not su...
